Who’s That? BoomTown 2014 #3

If you missed the first two posts in this series then check back for them here and here.  But today the focus is on a band who shall be performing on our brand new Folk and World stage, The Old Mines.

La Chiva Gantiva

Saw these guys in London a couple of months back, mostly enticed by this video (which I can’t embed for some reason), and a review which likened them to both Gogol Bordello and Manu Chao.

It was perhaps unfair to go in there with expectations married to 2 of my favourite live bands, especially as La Chiva Gantiva is rather a different beast to both of them, but they certainly brought an incredible energy to the proceedings and vocalist Rafael Espinel leaped around the stage, firing his Columbian flow over the tightest, heaviest Latin Funk, Afrobeat and big Rage / Chilli Peppers style breakdowns.

The crowd at Rich Mix that night were the squarest, most subdued bunch of East Londoners imaginable (it was the London Jazz Festival #justsayin), yet the band managed to shake everyone into life and made them all go crazy.  I can’t wait to see what they do to a BoomTown crowd.

For a pre taster of what to expect, I highly recommend their new album, Vivo that is out on 17th February it’s been doing a great job livening up the BoomTown office today.
