A-WA – Habib Galbi

First track I’ve heard by these 3 sisters from the small Israeli desert village of Shaharut but it’s one of the best examples of Middle Eastern pop I’ve heard for some time. It’s a traditional Yemenite Folk song that has been revamped by the trio with some help from Balkan Beat Box members Tomer Yosef (who produced the track and also directed the video) and Tamir Muskat (who mixed the track and provided the drums).

There’s a Yosef produced album to follow with “love and protest songs of women in the Yemeni-Arabic dialect, that were passed on as an oral tradition and were first recorded in the early 60’s by the Yemeni singer-songwriter Shlomo Moga’a.”
