Holy Forest – Africa Calling

Inspired by a trip to the Makasutu (meaning ‘sacred’) forest in Gambia and featuring Gambian griot Tata Dindin Jobarteh on the kora (currently the third musician I’ve heard described as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the kora’ after my boy Sekou Kouyate and one of his cousins, though a quick Google of that particular accolade only comes up with Sekou), this is simply stunning track from filmmaker / producer Jon Fine and his recent Holy Forest project!

Despite the kora, the music itself is more Afrobeat inspired and so the Antibalas horn section are the perfect inclusion, whilst the vocals are pure heartfelt Soul from Harlem based singer, Ed ‘Preacherman’ Holley. It’a cross cultural fusion which works so perfectly it doesn’t even feel like a fusion.
