Ibrahim Maalouf – Run The World (Girls)

Unfortunately my Elizabeth SmithLearn French in a Day‘ course arrived whilst I was in Paris at the weekend, so I haven’t yet learned enough to know what the hell is going on this video. But let’s not dwell on that, or the irony of an all male Jazz band covering a track about girls running the world, and replacing Beyonce with a trumpet (I don’t think this last bit has any actual significance to the irony, but it could do).

After listening to Daedelus and Kneebody‘s exceptional and experimental Jazz album on Brainfeeder this morning, this is definitely on the lighter side of the genre, but I’m feeling it still.

I first came across Lebanese Parisian trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf through his work with rapper Oxmo Puccino which is great and certainly worth checking back for, but yet again I’m unable to translate what they’re on about so I have a playlist of French Hip-hop tunes ready to roll and if Elizabeth can’t unlock at least some of them for me, I’m sending the course back.
