Arashkha – Gloria à la Negra

This is the first time I’ve come across Arash Khalatbari aka Arashkha before but I’m loving this rather sombre take on Cape Verde’s Funana sound. Similar in pace and rhythm to Power Soca but heavy on the accordion (much more sparse and dubbed out here), the Funana rhythms drive the track hypnotically whilst the Spanish vocals sound almost like religious chants, making this tracks both ethereal and full of energy.

Arashkha is originally from Iran and was part of French based Global fusion group Ekova. He’s been based in Reunion Island since 2001 and this is his first single from forthcoming album ‘A Tribute To The Dark Venus’ due out in September on Nomad Roots Records.
